SpreadBets are just another vehicle for trading instruments. You are betting whether the price will advance or decline.....as always. Margin requirements for the SpreadBetters are very low...for stocks its 5%. For the FTSE100 I thing it is £100 per point bet.

Does anyone know how the futures exchanges calculate margin requirement per contract? I know that they base it on volatility, but do you know if the calculation is entirely objective and something we can code or is it a case of exchange "finger in the air" mechanics?

If you programmed a dynamic system and it has more than 7-10 parameters, I would bet that it would not be very robust.

Thinking about it, I'm trying to achieve "regression to the mean", in recent history, time.
